How to Check if Your Name Is on Electoral Roll

Voting is an important part of any democracy and India is no exception to this. Along with the 2019 general elections and its pre-election state elections, it is always better to check whether your name is still on the electoral roll in India or not. The voter list keeps changing in the country and sometimes it means that your name may disappear from electoral rolls.

If you want to vote in any election, whether it is parliamentary elections of 2019 or state elections, then you should have a voter identity card issued by the Election Commission of India and your name should be on an electoral roll. It is not enough to have just one voter ID to cast your vote. This is why it is very important to check whether your name is on the voters' list before the election.

To check whether my name is on the voters' list or not

Follow these steps to check whether your name is on the electoral roll in India or not.

  1. Visit the National Voter Service Portal (NVSP) Electoral Search page.
  2. Here you can find your name on the voter list in two ways - manually enter all your details or just by entering your Election Photo ID Card (EPIC) number. The EPIC number has been mentioned in bold letters on your voter ID card.

If you have an EPIC number mentioned on your voter ID

If you have an EPIC number, go through these steps to check whether your name is on the voters' list or not.

  1. Visit the NVSP Electoral Search page.
  2. C lick or tap Search by EPIC number.
  3. Enter your EPIC number, select the state from the drop-down menu, and the key in the image that you see on the image. Then click or tap Search.
  4. If your name is on an electoral roll, you will be able to see it under the Search button. If nothing is visible, then there is a good chance that your name is not on the voter's list.

If you do not have your EPIC number

If you do not have your voter ID and thus do not have your EPIC number then you should help in checking that your name is on the voters' list or not.

  1. Visit the NVSP Electoral Search page.
  2. Click or tap a search by the description.
  3. Important in all the details, including your name, gender, age, assembly area, etc. as described on the page. Then enter the code that appears on the captcha image, and in the end, click or tap the search.
  4. If you see results in the area below the Search button, then that means your name is on the voter's list. If not, then maybe it is not there.

In India, voter identity papers are not always spelled correctly. We know many people whose names have mispronounced their voter identity papers and there is a chance that the search by the described method is not giving the desired results because the spelling of the name does not match on the EC's database. This is the reason why we recommend that you see your name on the electoral roll through EPIC number as it is less likely to return false results.

Some states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu also allow you to check whether your name is on voter lists via SMS or not. To do this, go to the Election Commission page for Chief Election Officer websites and select your state from the list, then click on Go. After this, you will have to find the option that lets you find the electoral roll. This is where the CEO of each state lists whether there is an option to check the status of his voter list through SMS.
